Simulation and modeling
SHS exothermic reactions are high energy, coupled processes that interact with the surrounding media. To predict the effects on the surroundings, we use a range of thermal, structural, and reaction simulators in concert with experiments to form the conceptual process models.
System processes are tested at small to large scales, under a range of pressure, saturation, and thermal conditions. Scaled experiments evaluate individual processes, which are then integrated with simulations. Ultimately, field tests are the final demonstration of the system effectiveness.
Material testing and evaluation
To manage the formation process, the ingredient materials and reaction processes must be well-characterized and controlled. Reactant composition and morphology, reaction properties, and product rheology and microstructure are measured. We use a range of thermal measurement techniques to quantify reaction characteristics.
Prototype design and fabrication
The final system is deployed in wells using commercial emplacement systems. The engineering design considers dimensional compatibility with the wellbore, mechanical and electrical interfaces with the emplacement system, and suitability to withstand the pressure, thermal, and chemical conditions in the operating environment.
SHS powder preparation and compaction
Reactive plug ingredients must be carefully specified, prepared, blended, compacted, and packaged to form the emplacement packages and achieve the desired reaction characteristics. ORI has developed the processes, packaging, and special compaction dies to form the plug packages for downhole emplacement and reaction.
