High performance sealing features for wells
The industry faces difficult challenges in reliably sealing and securing wells used in oil and gas, geothermal energy, CO2 injection, and nuclear waste isolation. We are developing high performance sealing materials and systems for the most challenging downhole environments.
As wells are drilled deeper into extreme thermal, stress, and corrosion environments, conventional sealing approaches and materials are reaching their limits of operation. Olympic Research is developing high performance ceramic-like components that can be formed in place, to complement or replace conventional well cements and plugging systems. These materials offer superior strength, thermal, and corrosion characteristics when compared to conventional cement-based well sealing materials.
We are developing materials, processes, and emplacement systems based on the Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) process. SHS uses the thermal energy released from a solid phase metal/oxidizer reaction, supplemented by carefully engineered additives, to form ceramic-like sealing features in wells at depth, under water. The process results in a rapidly-formed plug that reaches its design strength in hours, exhibits very high compressive and casing bond strength, very high service temperature and corrosion resistance, and low permeability. The system is delivered to the well-head as a pre-manufactured package, requiring no blending or preparation in the field, emplaced with a standard wireline deployment system.
